Breed of the Month – The Rough Coated Collie

by on February 3, 2010

Over the years, several different breeds of dogs have touched our hearts in the big screen, from Old Yeller (mix / Labrador Mastiff) to Benji (a terrier) Beethoven (a St. Bernard) to Underdog (a beagle). But no matter what race shines on TV or film, can not agree with Lassie, the family dog par excellence. Rough Coated Collie always been a popular breed in Scotland and England, and Lassie, the most famous dog in the world, "the race was beloved in the eyes of Americans as well.

But not all breeds exhibited in film or television make good family companions. Take for example the Jack Russell Terrier, became famous in the movie My Dog Skip and the TV show "Frasier." Chosen for their intelligence and puppy look, seem to be excellent choices for children or the life of the city. But in reality, Jack Russell are obstinate and stubborn, making them very difficult to train but require a large yard with a constant physical activity, or they can become destructive, and has been known to lose his temper with young children. However, as casting a Collie family dog adored the world over could not be closer to the truth. For once, Hollywood got it right.

Here's the breakdown:

Temperament 5 of 5

Collies are my top-ten list of best family breeds for many reasons. They become extremely devoted to his family and often choose themselves as nannies for children, protect them at all times. They make great babysitters outdoors for older children, accompanying them on field trips and outdoor romps. The house is quiet and regal, happy to curl up at your feet. Even at rest in her lap is good because, although they are considered a great race, are surprisingly light and tender.

Training 5 of 5

The Collie family is home to some of the most intelligent breeds of canines. Because of this, they tend to get bored with long training and repetitive to keep the sessions short, varied and entertaining. Very eager to please, learn what disturbs their owners quickly and try to avoid at all costs. Smooth and consistent discipline for the first year and will have a very fine companion for the coming years. Praising good behavior is the best tool for training with this breed. As puppies, collies can be hyper, because grazing of their natural instincts, which require extra attention and exercise, but must be established for two years.

Grooming 2 of 5

Bath only when necessary, but often brush – mats can damage the sensitive skin underneath the skin. When the mats are very hard to brush, which can be cut with scissors. Daily brushing reduce shedding and keep the layer of dirt, burs, sticks, and pollen. Always keep your nails trimmed Collie, especially if it's a pet inside. Long nails on hard surfaces accelerate the arthritis. No need haircuts – collies have thick coats throughout the year keeping the heat in winter and cool in summer. Never shave your Collie! This removes the protective layer and can cause overheating and sunburn.

Rated 4 of 5

Collies will do best with a large expanse of land or a large patio, along with a family of adventurers and curious. Because they are breeding dogs, their bodies need exercise outside of the strap for optimal health. Apartment living is not recommended unless they can adequately perform abroad. They can range from 22 to 26 inches tall and weigh 50 to 75 pounds. The pets in general is very healthy when sold by breeders trust. Be careful not to overfeed, because their thick coats it is difficult to know if they are overweight.Collies love swimming, fetch, Frisbee, herding, agility, and took long walks with many attractions adventure odors.
